Wouldn't put too much faith in Apple considering the Xserve is no longer in production. No word on whether or not OS X Server will even be released in the future. Seriously though, try one of the many linux distros that are supported by Zimbra.

You need to add for both root and zimbra users. Should look like this at the end of /etc/security/limits.conf:
zimbra soft nofile 524288

zimbra hard nofile 524288

root soft nofile 524288

root hard nofile 524288

Crashed again. Open files as root 1091. After zmcontrol restart down to 232. Earlier in the day it was around 750.
