sudo -u zimbrawhichever command as required from my bash shell to achieve the same effect.

I 'su root' ed then 'su zimbra' and tried restarting Zimbra and tomcat separately. It works fine!? I get the webmail instances starting on 8443 as desired and no LDAP errors.
How come?

Because sudo and su act differently. Fortunately, they both have man pages :)
