Install new server rather than upgrade in place

Post by cthart »

Hi,

For various reasons (old server running 8.0.9 on Ubuntu 10.04, want to run new server on a virtual machine) we want to install a new Zimbra server rather than upgrade in place.
I can't find any clear instructions on doing this.

I'm trying to restore a backup from our production 8.0.9 server in a new test 8.8.6 installation, but the LDAP restore seemingly fails because the server (obviously) has a different name.

How can I do restore the backup data into the new installation?

Surely not everyone just blindly upgrades in place without testing first?

Thanks for any pointers,

Colin

This topic has been covered many times in these forums and my advice is always to use the ZeXtras Migration Tool (you would have found that during a searck ;)) - it's free, easy to use and it works well, try it and see for yourself.

I tried that but didn't get very far:

Code: Select all

Checking for existing installations ...

FOUND Zimbra 8.8.6

The ZeXtras Installer is not compatible with the Zimbra version you are running.

It's likely that:

* You are running a Zimbra version that is not YET supported by ZeXtras Migration Tool
After a new Zimbra version is released, a new ZeXtras Migration Tool version is released
    as well to ensure compatibility:
please check the "News and Announcements" section of the ZeXtras Forums
      (http://forums.zextras.com) for new release information.

A complete list of Zimbra versions compatible with ZeXtras Migration Tool can be found at

Because of migrating Zimbra to a KVM I decided also to begin with a clean new setup. If you only have to move a couple of mailboxes, these instructions will help you very well:

You might lose some individual configuration adjustments, so keep the old machine accessible until the VM is ready. The method above don't save COS and server configuration (i. e. spam protection, DKIM, etc.)

You need to install the correct version on each of the server, check the wiki at ZeXtras for the compatibility matrix.
