8.8.9 Patch 2 - Post Installation - zmcontrol -v still reports P1

Post by DavidMerrill »

Has anyone given ZCS 8.8.9 Patch 2 a go?

So far my patching of ZCS 8.8.8/8.8.9 systems has been trouble free, but with this last patch for 8.8.9 after all was said & done "zmcontrol -v" still reports Release 8.8.9.GA.2055.UBUNTU16.64 UBUNTU16_64 NETWORK edition, Patch 8.8.9_P1.

Below I've shared what I saw on the console (see below), from what I see zimbra-network-modules-ng and zimbra-talk gets installed as expected (see https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Zimbra_Releases/8.8.9/P2).

Remark/Question: My suspicion is that the patch is installed but whatever "zmcontrol -v" accesses to report to you at the CLI might not have been updated? Although to be fair at the end of my output you'll see I run a "apt-get install zimbra-patch" which reports "zimbra-patch is already the newest version (8.8.9.1531484537.p1-1.u16).", so maybe I don't actually have Patch 2 installed.

Question: Is there a way to verify what package versions came in 8.8.9 Patch 2?

Same for me in RHEL6. I think it is due to the fact that in 8.8.9_P2 you have onkly the changed for ng modules (https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Zimbra_Releases/8.8.9/P2):
Note on fixes in this Patch This patch includes fixes only on Zimbra NG modules like NG and Chat/Talk. There are no fixes in Zimbra Core modules.
No fixes in ZImbra Core modules means no visible version change for

OK fair enough (seems plausible), and thanks for sharing your intel! Helps to know I'm not the only one. :)

It'd be a good test if Patch 3 does include changes to Zimbra Core Modules to see if "zmcontrol -v" reports P3.

So sad for me that it offends my OCD/fussiness (if my boss asks me if I've installed the latest patches how do I confirm?).

Personally, my view is that if you install P2, you are at P2, and -v should reflect that, even if there were no changes to core and P2=P1. If this is the case then the only change to core is to bump the version ID. If the developers don't want OS users to install the patch, then perhaps they could try something like "Patch 1a.NE" or "Patch NE2", to make it obvious to OS users that the patch doesn't apply. Then the response to "are we up on the latest patches?" becomes "yes, there was another patch for NE but it doesn't change anything for us".

NE customers can always file a bug report (as P2 only affects those users) or you can wait for P3 to appear (I think shortly) - there's nothing that can be done on these forums.

Yep, I see that now, thanks for sharing. The diff (https://wiki.zimbra.com/index.php?title ... ldid=65642) helps me stay sane (in explaining to others, e.g. management).

It still seems rather strange to me. I would have thought that any update to a component used by ZCS and even has a patch number should update the ZCS version but, hey, what the hell does an open source user now about patches ?
