Ubuntu upgrade with zcs installed

Post by frakir »

Hello,
I have zcs 8.7.11 on Ubuntu 14.04 and I'd like to upgrade Ubuntu 16.04.
But the upgrade removes parts of zcs and zcs is unusable after the upgrade.
I tried to upgrade zcs after that but it says doesnt' see the installation and it's a new install.
I tried to upgrad to the latest zcs 8.8.7 but it's the same.

Is there any right way to upgrade os - Ubuntu from 14.04 to 16.04 with zcs installed?

As far as I'm concerned you should never do an in-place upgrade of the O/S. Run up a new server then use the ZeXtras Migration Tool to move to the new server, it's quick, free and less problematic in the long run.

Yes, always do a clean install of the OS. The Zextras tool is definitely recommended for this.

Doing a direct OS upgrade brings directly to hell. Basically you are leaving the zimbra old packages and pretending them to run on a new system.
At least you should use the zimbra packages for that ubuntu version.
For 10->12 and for 12->14 there is an explicit guide: https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Ubuntu_Upgrades that describe exactly that, upgrade the system, install the packages with ./install.sh -s, configure the new stuff with ./install.sh.
The guide is old and doesn't mention 14-16 upgrades, but the logic is the same.
Or you can backup/restore with zextras migration tool...
