DNS

Post by snowymoountain »

Hi,

I have Zimbra 8.8.9 I'm going to upgrade but I never ever got DNS working on the Machine it's self so it relies on another server for a lookup of it's own domain name... this is silly and surely I can make the server aware of it's own domain name normally I would simply put an entry into the hosts file but if I remember correctly this failed and I have no idea why...

I must have missed something because I am sure it should be super simple ?

Thanks

If you're behind a NAT router or firewall you would need a Split DNS (yes, you require a DNS server) in addition to the Public DNS records, if it's just on a public IP then public DNS would be needed - AFAIK, it does a look-up for the MX records and they are not defined in the hosts file but a DNS server.

why is it looking up an MX Record ? it would be handy if you could enable or disable this feature on install / upgrade etc so that an altered hosts file would suffice...

Setting up a DNS server on ZCS or an external one is trivial.
