ZCS 8.8.15 considered harmful

Postby thomas.klaube » Mon Aug 05, 2019 1:34 pm

Hi all,

we have upgraded one of our Zimbra Servers from zcs-NETWORK-8.8.12 to version 8.8.15. This system is completely broke now. The mailbox.log shows:

Code: Select all

2019-08-05 11:23:06,490 WARN  [qtp961409111-29075:https://zimbra.server/] [] webclient - system failure: Connection pool shut down
com.zimbra.common.service.ServiceException: system failure: Connection pool shut down
ExceptionId:qtp961409111-29075:https://zimbra.server/:1564996986490:ce444bbd87232303
Code:service.FAILURE
        at com.zimbra.common.service.ServiceException.FAILURE(ServiceException.java:288)
        at com.zimbra.client.ZMailbox.invoke(ZMailbox.java:1011)
        at com.zimbra.client.ZMailbox.invoke(ZMailbox.java:987)
        at com.zimbra.client.ZMailbox.invokeJaxbToElement(ZMailbox.java:970)
        at com.zimbra.client.ZMailbox.invokeJaxb(ZMailbox.java:975)
        at com.zimbra.client.ZMailbox.authByAuthToken(ZMailbox.java:905)
        at com.zimbra.client.ZMailbox.<init>(ZMailbox.java:739)

The loginscreen of the WebUI is screwed up - the system is just not usable at all... Restarting services helps - for some time...

What I really wonder is: how is it even possible for zimbra to ship this totally buggy version? And even more: This should now become the _only_ supported version (according to https://www.zimbra.com/support/support- ... lifecycle/) ?!?

And it seems that there are others with this problem:

Yes, 8.8.15 is (currently) supposed to be the final release of Zimbra "classic", i.e., the Zimbra that's been developed since 2005 or so.

The replacement is "Zimbra X" (https://info.zimbra.com/zimbra-x-beta), https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/ ... oud-Oracle,

Beside some marketing bla bla I have not read, heard let alone seen anything substantial on "Zimbra X". On "Oracle Cloud Marketplace" the Zimbra X App lists exactly 0 (zero!) ratings. I guess that there is not a single user on this Platform.

So, the question is: what exactly is Zimbra plan here? Is there a plan?

To quote the Zimbra web site:

Zimbra X is currently in an invite-only Partner Development Program.
My guess would be that also carries a non-disclosure agreement, hence the reason you've heard nothing.

To quote another two pieces from Synacor blurb:

Monetize through optional advertisements and integration with Synacor’s advertising platform

Offers turnkey migration, customization, cloud delivery, and monetization
I would also guess that's why there's no on-premises or FOSS version.

Hello All,

We have a workaround for this, please enable zimbraCsrfTokenCheckEnabled by running below commands and restart mailbox service:

Code: Select all

su - zimbra
zmprov mcf zimbraCsrfTokenCheckEnabled TRUE
zmmailboxdctl restart

Hello Hsingh,

Thanks for your reply. Im going to give it a try in a lab version of the Zimbra I had the issue with and will report to let you know if it worked.
I dont know exactly when I will do so but hopefully, still this Week.

Also, can you perhaps explain me what is attribute is for?

Thanks

This really scares me about Zimbra X. I went with Zimbra because I refuse to put my email in a hosted cloud and SAAS. I JUST bought this software and JUST finished migrating my 150+ users. I'll be changing again if they try to force me to a hosted cloud or make me pay a montly fee other than support.

Zimbra X and Zimbra 8.8.15 are two different products for two different markets. Zimbra X is for the Service Provider market: telecoms, ISPs etc. whereas 8.8.15 is for the commercial market: companies that want to know and control where their email data lives.

8.8.15 gets security patches and bug fixes through the end of 2022, and technical support thereafter until the end of 2023. I don't see that you would forced to migrate to a cloud service anytime before then.

Service Providers (Synacor is a service provider and was reputed to be Zimbra's largest customer before they bought Zimbra) typically do heavy rebranding, write their own zimlets and try to monetize their installed base via advertising and using a custom Home tab on the web interface. The Home tab can be customized to provides boxes of RSS feeds and some static content for example. Some companies deploy this to have what is essentially an Intranet on the Zimbra web interface. You can see an example if you browse to ~/jetty/webapps/zimbra/portals/example on any of your mailbox servers.

I think it's fairly amazing that a software stack that is cost-effective for a 150-person companies like yours can also scale to hosting millions of mailboxes reliably -- especially one that is more than a decade and a half old at this point. So doing a major refactoring like Zimbra X for the the large service providers will only benefit Zimbra's commercial customers as that technology makes its way into the commercial product (whatever it will be called).

Hope that helps,
Mark

Where, exactly, has Synacor provided any information about the continued existence of the current on-site deployment of the current ZCS version - their silence in these forums is stunning, extremely disappointing and a missed opportunity.
