Ok, so I know it is only Beta, but I would expect it to work, looks like instant messaging is dead on my server at the moment, done a zmcontrol stop / start in case a service wasn't running, but still no dice.
Logging into the webclient, all users have the IM tab (and show as online unless they chose otherwise) however logging in as two different users via the webclient in separate VM's I can't send messages between them and I can't add users to the buddy lists.... something clearly isn't working.

Hi David,
Sorry it's not working.
IMs are logged into /opt/zimbra/log/zmmailboxd.out
So, I sugest setting up an SSH session and tailing the log with refresh:
su - zimbra
tail -f /opt/zimbra/log/zmmailboxd.out
Then send an IM from one user to the other. Capture the output and look for errors.

Ok did that and the output of one message is:
http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> xmlns="" style="">Yello
Body is: Yello
Which I guess means something is happening, although the intended recipient receives nothing

I looked at zmmailboxd.out.200801050000 and found everything I and the other party entered (both Zimbra 5.0.0 GA accts). We are unable to chat to each other. Nothing appears on either of our screens from the other.
We can't even add each other to our buddy lists (how is that supposed to work).
But, we do see the output of our attempted chats here: zmmailboxd.out
Does anyone have a resolution to this?
Thanks!

Glad I'm not the only one, (sorry to hear though, I was looking forward to this feature)

I was having the *exact* same issue myself after upgrading from 4.5.9 to 5.0GA, but after invoking the following commands (from a thread I cannot find, unfort!), everything has worked swimmingly!
(as user 'zimbra')
zmprov -l -v mcf zimbraXMPPEnabled TRUE
zmprov -v mc default zimbraFeatureIMEnabled TRUE
zmprov -v mc default zimbraFeatureInstantNotify TRUE
zmcontrol stop
zmcontrol start
Good luck!

Thank you so much. This appears to work. Do you have to do this every time you restart the server, or is the one time sufficient?

Seems odd that enabling chat in the COS doesn't actually seem to start the service!
