TinyMCE Editor, why is it so hard?

Whatever happened to the ability to insert code tags in the editor (we used to have it on the old forums)? Using the Rich Text Editor why is it so hard to insert an image in these posts? I tried to add an image as a "media" item, it plonked the image right over the text I'd just typed and no obvious way to move the item anywhere else. It really is a pain to be using this editor, I don't want to have to learn something else just to perform a minor task like adding an image to a post (and the other shortcomings on this implementation of TinyMCE) - why isn't it more WYSYWYG.
