Zimbra 7 to zimbra 8

Post by Geetha Thanu »

Dear Gurus
I wanted to upgrade the existing Zimbra 7 to zimbra 8 in another machine with different OS. The information of the OS in the existing machine and the new machine is given below. When read the documentation, I understood that first, the same old verison of zimbra need to be installed in the new OS and then after copying the mail folders and other info from old, then the zimbra to be upgraded to new version.
I did the installation and started zimbra. Able to login to the admin GUI, but mails are not going. Seeing this error in maillog.

What OS/version did you have on the old and new machines? Unless the versions are identical I don't think you can just move it over.

The new version and old version is given. Finally able to install zimbra 7 by installing some missing perl modules and tested for sending and receiving mails.

Copied complete /opt/zimbra directory from old to new server using rsync. Now again trying to start zimbra and getting the following error.

[zimbra@primaryzimbra ~]$ zmcontrol start

Host primaryzimbra.ccmb.res.in

Starting ldap...Done.

Unable to determine enabled services from ldap.

Unable to determine enabled services. Cache is out of date or doesn't exist.

please to help to solve this issue. DNS entry is fine. Changed the hostname.
thanks
DNS entry is fine.
When you make statements like this you should, for verification, provide some evidence that what you say is correct.
Changed the hostname.
That might be your problem. How and at what point did you change the hostname?

thanks for your quick reply.
old server had the server name as node2. and localconfig.xml entry as webmail.ccmb.res.in(since its installed in HA cluster and virtual name was webmail.ccmb.res.in)
New destination server name is primaryzimbra.ccmb.res.in this has mx entry in dns server. changed the localconfig.xml entry from webmail to primaryzimbra.ccmb.res.in.
show here o/p of dig command
[root@primaryzimbra conf]# dig primaryzimbra.ccmb.res.in mx
; <<>> DiG 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.17.rc1.el6 <<>> primaryzimbra.ccmb.res.in mx
I did not change the hostname of the server. I changed in the localconfig.xml file only.
Why did you do that and what are you trying to achieve? According to the DNS information you've posted above there is no MX record for this server and that's why you're getting the error message about LDAP not starting and changing localconfig files isn't helping.

Hi,
As you mention
"[zimbra@primaryzimbra ~]$ zmcontrol start

Host primaryzimbra.ccmb.res.in

Starting ldap...Done.

Unable to determine enabled services from ldap.

Unable to determine enabled services. Cache is out of date or doesn't exist."
Please check possible error in logs.
also check output of

[zimbra@primaryzimbra ~]$ zmhostname
Is your ZCS services are running fine ?

Thanks for your reply. Atlast I changed the hostname similar to old servername and copied back the localconfig.xml file of the old server. It started with all the mails(around 1.TB) user mails. Thanks for your support.
Can you please give me the procedure of upgrading now from Zimbra 7 to 8 without disturbing/corrupting all these data. waiting for your reply.
thanks

Hi,
Your are using FOSS edition of ZCS : 7.0.1_GA_3105.RHEL5_64_20110304210645 CentOS6_64 FOSS edition rite.

Do you have any backup planing for it before upgrading from ZCS-7 to ZCS-8. (8.0.7 Latest version)
For safer side you always have "backup copy" before upgrading.
