Upgrade to 8.8.6 and weird issue

Post by Paladinemishakal »

Hi All,

Recently we have upgrade Zimbra to Release 8.8.6.GA.1906.UBUNTU14.64 UBUNTU14_64 FOSS edition and my setup is 2 MTA (mail01,mail02) and 3 Mail store (mail05,mail06,mail07).

We have report that some of our users who is using Thunderbird 45.7.1 and 59 beta 2, when they move emails from
1. their own account's Inbox to a subfolder,
2. their own account's Inbox to a mounted account's subfolder,
3. mounted account's subfolder to another mounted account's subfolder,
when they go to the target folder to check, the email are not there but when they login to Zimbra Web mail to check, the emails are there.

When they perform this copy/move operation, they will get this error message:
The current operation on "Folder" did not succeed. The mail server for account xyz@domain.com responded: mail05.domain.com Zimbra IMAP4rev1 server closing connection.

This only happens when the user is using Thunderbird, when we use Outlook 2012 to view the affected folder, it shows the same thing which is the mails is not there. In Zimbra Web Mail, we do not face this issue.
We tried to check in the mail server logs but we cannot find any indication of this error.

On the servers, these are the setting we have set:

Code: Select all

       | zimbraImapMaxConnections | zimbraImapNumThreads |
mail01 | 200 | 200 |
mail02 | 200 | 200 |
mail05 | 1000 | 1000 |
mail06 | 1000 | 1000 |
mail07 | 1000 | 1000 |
Is anyone facing this issue? How do we solve this?

Thanks & Regards.

Further checking on this, I found out that on Zimbra Webmail, go to the folder that the user have moved the emails to, it shows in webmail (eg. 751 message).
Open Thunderbird and go to the same folder, the email client shows 724 message. I have tried to download the folder for offline and also tried to repair the folder, both doesn't work.

While checking, I noticed that the message in Webmail is read so I went to right-click and select "Mark as unread", check in Thunderbird and behold, the missing email appears in the same folder. Did the same thing to the rest of the missing emails in Webmail and in Thunderbird, the missing email all appeared.

To double check, I wen to mark the message as read in Webmail, check in Thunderbird, the same email get mark as read too.

Hi,
i have the same issue after upgrading from 8.7.11 to 8.8.6 and installing the hotfix.
Any further news about the issue?

Well there seems to be 8.8.7 available. Maybe this solves the issue?!

Seems i have found a little workaround:

Set the established imap Connections in thunderbird to 1, then it is working again for future mails.

Edit: seems not to be the solution. setting back to 5 does same thing. so there might be some failures with the acls or so.

Problem persists, upgrade to 8.8.7 doesnt change a thing.

We need to have this working again as all clients are using thunderbird.

Wild guess. You can search for DoSFilter in mailbox.out but heavy thunderbird users in our experience can use more requests per second than some of the defaults. Verify this value and increase it if low or you are seeing messages in the logs.

Code: Select all

zmprov gs `zmhostname` zimbraHttpDosFilterMaxRequestsPerSec
You could also enable extra thunderbird protocol logging to find out what is happening... been about 10 years since I used thunderbird but this seems to be a link how to enable imap protocol logging. https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging
Note: I remember being called in on an email that wasn't displaying correctly. It seemed to fail at different places but never completely rendered. I looked at it and it had 100+ graphics but looked like a normal text email but was a vendor report from wallmart. The needed that inventory report, so I did this. Lots of strange places for DosFilter to get involved with Zimbra. :-)

Code: Select all

zmprov mcf zimbraHttpDosFilterMaxRequestsPerSec 130
zmmailboxdctl restart

Thanks for the input which i just tried.
Unfortunately it doesnt change the problem.

At the moment i have no clue where to look for what is happening, i will test your thunderbird logging link tomorrow as it is a bit late today. ;)

Thanks to the logging feature i found the following output after changing to the folder where i moved the message

2018-03-21 08:58:09.212000 UTC - 3580[1415a790]: ReadNextLine [stream=cbad150 nb=21 needmore=0]
2018-03-21 08:58:09.212000 UTC - 3580[1415a790]: 14f0e000:mail.domain.tld:S-INBOX/subfolder:CreateNewLineFromSocket: * BAD Unknown Error

2018-03-21 08:58:09.212000 UTC - 3580[1415a790]: ReadNextLine [stream=cbad150 nb=67 needmore=0]
2018-03-21 08:58:09.212000 UTC - 3580[1415a790]: 14f0e000:mail.domain.tld:S-INBOX/subfolder:CreateNewLineFromSocket: * BYE mail.domain.tld Zimbra IMAP4rev1 server closing connection

But an Unknown Error doesnt seem to bring me forward into some useful direction. ;)

I checked with different mail programs, the problem seems to be not only thunderbird related.

Perhaps related to this report - [bug]108880[/bug].

"Note: IMAP client configurations predating ZCS 8.8.6 may be able to show contents of the old shared mailboxes until they are configured again."

The big question is why do other MUA's not have exhibit this behavior? Do they all see the same number of folders/files or simply don't report the error to the user in case you have narrowed it down to a folder.

I did a test run with Opera Mail and Pegasus Mail and the problem is there as well.
So it is not Thunderbird related i think.

Meanwhile it seems to work again halfway.
If i move a message to a folder which i viewed recently the message is shown and everything is fine.
But i am able to reproduce the problem with a folder i havent viewed since the upgrade.
Moving the next message to the same folder works again.

This makes me think that there happens something to the folder when i view it first after the update.
But in which logfile to look for what is happening to folders? ;)
