how about periodic (say every 5 minutes) Java thread dumps by sending kill -3 to the tomcat Java process, and attaching the catalina.out with the results of that to bug 14160? Will greatly help diagnose this.

away message is sent if To or CC contains (unless it is really large To or CC list) the user's primary or user's aliases or a zimbraPrefOutOfOfficeDirectAddress for that user (can be set only from CLI today).
