I have exactly the same problem after upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 To 16.04.
I upgraded from 8.7 to 8.7.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 and then performed the Ubuntu upgrade. No problem with the -s option but without I cant get it to run.
Is there a workaround that works? I wouldn't want to restore my snapshot.

Well, the locale of the server is German and the client PCs are all set to German, too.
Don't think it depends on the locale. Wouldn't make much sense in a multilingual software.
