I decided to delete the domain.
After the successful removal of the domain, sending and receiving mails for both domains between the two servers is working fine.

I had a Zimbra mail server mail.a.com which served two mail-domains: a.com and b.com . Since the two mail domains a.com and b.com should now run on different servers, I did a full clone of the Zimbra mail server vm and renamed the second instance to mail.b.com . I had to update my postfix conf var mynetworks because of a changed subnet.
