my goal is to not have the problem for clients.
this is a longstanding, unresolved issue with zimbra', that's not getting acknowledged/addressed.
lacking any alternative, the 'workaround' of getting rid of zimbra works.

For anyone interested, switching IMAP servers to Dovecot or Cyrus solves the problem.
