Re: How to properly backup Zimbra? - Pausing
Sorry to rekindle a dead thread, but I wanted to let anyone interested know that there is a second version of the "outside the VM" backup script - this one pauses the VirtualBox VMs (rather than a full shutdown) as it backs up. Pausing has several advantages: less downtime (no need to shut...

Confirming heath status of Zimbra system
All, I’m looking for some input on creating a script to verify a running zimbra system (single server at this point). The reason I need it is that I have found Zimbra occasionally fails to start cleanly after reboots. Example causes are LDAP slow to start causing service failures (several), patches ...

Re: How to properly backup Zimbra?
I feel that if you can write that script, you can also do what I typed, or automate that :) Yeah... old linux programmer here. Not devops though... I look for simplicity. :-) Apparently, VirtualBox can use raw disk back-ends, so it should be easy enough for you to migrate to LVM using dd, except th...

Re: How to properly backup Zimbra?
Just in case anyone is interested in a simple outside-the-vm backup for VMs (like Zimbra), here is a copy of my script: https://github.com/tussock/VirtualBoxBackup It has the following advantages: - VERY simple - it doesn't require @halfgaar's mad devops skills :-) - Restore is trivial - grab the la...

Re: How to properly backup Zimbra?
I looked at snapshots, but saw a few comments that snapshots were not a suitable long term backup mechanism. Probably when they say it's not a long term solution, they mean live copy-on-write snapshots, and retaining them. That's true, because all write operations then have to be duplicated. My sys...

Re: How to properly backup Zimbra?
I've been Googling for backup strategies/scripts, and I find it all very rudimentary, and when it comes to disaster recovery, mostly inferior to my virtual machine snapshots. Can I ask you about this... because I've been struggling with clean backups for Zimbra. My Zimbra server is running in Virtu...

Re: Fresh Zimbra install is an open relay
Zimbra, by default, is not an open relay and would only be so if you've made any changes to it. What changes have you made? Have a look at some of the other questions/solutions on the forums for details of what you can check. While I didn't think I had done anything to enable open relay... I have s...

Advice on improving stability
Hi, I'm reasonably new to the zimbra world, and have the zimbra community edition running. I've been having occasional problems with stability, and I'm looking for advice on improving it. I'm very nervous of updates as the most recent couple took down the server. One was caused by a file being set t...

Fresh Zimbra install is an open relay
I've just completed a Zimbra Open Source install. At the end of it, I ran some checks, and it seems that the server is an open relay. I tested this using the following online checks: mxtoolbox.com https://www.dnsexit.com/Direct.sv?cmd=testMailServer), both of these reported the server was an open re...
