Seems similar to this bug:
Bug 64263 – ZCO email fails to send when using 3rd party applications
Just started with 7.1.2 connector. Worked fine with previous versions with the registry addition of SyncDisabledProcesses.

Yes works perfect. You need to enable "Mobile Sync" for the user to use "Exchange" or "ActiveSync" on devices.

I have a similar setup but in a VM environment. The drives are RAID1 600GB SAS 15k drives though. Super fast and never had any issues with speed. If you can afford fast SAS drives, I would go with them.
