Search seems to work with outlook 2016 64bits + ZimbraConnectorOLK_8.7.0.1650_x64.msi.
I just tried a search for email last month, last year using ribbon.
And it seems to work using the advanced search adding field "received" on or before date(I tried 10.01.2015)

Strange, I find the zimbra soap documentation very good. what's missing in the documentation? I have always managed to follow that documentation. If your using the network edition, I would report it to zimbra support.
They can add a bug for you and probably raise the bug to be fixed quicker.

If you go the zimbra-soap route, you could do that and more(absolutly everything the webclient can do you can do using the zimbra soap api).
