I was talking about the final build result - what's ending up in the actual binary packages (and so, on the target system).

And here we previously had all these files unpacked - so they could be customized easily - which isn't the case anymore.

Now we just need to get the codebase in a clean state where it at least builds reliably. (well, already done that in the open-zimbra project)

Up to 8.0.x, you could modify login.jsp, but with 9.x that won't be (easily) possible anymore, as it's all compiled into a .war. If my suspicion turns out to be true, please file a bug ... parsing the logs for getting the service status definitively is a bad idea ...

You mean, the server stats page actually parses the logfiles instead of pinging the services ? ... not seriously... really ?!

Where exactly shall it help with the permission problem when just routing system syslog messages to zimbras private logfiles ?
