Error install on Mac OS X

Post by 939pcoleman »

I downloaded the Open Source MAC OS X install. When I run it everything

goes ok right up to the end of the install section and it then reports there was an error (no other info) and please try it again (didn't work).
Anyone have any idea why?
Thanks.
Pat.

Can you post your install log from /tmp? This might help us figure it out.

I had the same issue. Looking at /var/log/install.log, I saw some errors in the install saying the zimbra user wasn't created. I went ahead and created a zimbra user in system preferences>>accounts, and the install completed successfully.
I saw that the install script tries to create the zimbra user itself, but it must be doing so too late in the process.
I'm still looking into an issue not being able to access the admin console, so not sure if my install is 100% successful, but it got past that initial error being reported on the installer.

Did it say why the user wasn't created?
Also - for mac install, command-L (in the installer) and command-3 will pop up the install log, and you can see which script failed. If the installer fails, one of the pre or post pkg install scripts probably bailed.

It didn't say anything about why the user wasn't created?
Also I'm having the same problem that fozzy said he is having. I can't

connect to the admin console. It just says it can't connect to the server.

I'm not sure if everything is running but I do see a lot of http processes running.

I was able to connect to a spell checker of some sort. So some part of it is running?

Is tomcat running? ps auxww | grep tomcat. The httpd processes are the spell server, not the web/admin UI.
Can you telnet to port 80 or 7071? If no, tomcat didn't start. Check /var/log/zimbra.log or /opt/zimbra/tomcat/logs/catalina.out for errors (especially stack traces).
This may be a java issue - java 1.5 for mac is relatively new, so run software update and grab the latest updates.

Ok Tomcat is not running.
In the log file I get
postfix/postdrop[9202]: warning: unable to look up public/pickup
but in the Catalina.out I get
zmtomcatstart: info: stale pid 4495 in pid file: No such process

This release of Apache Tomcat was packaged to run on J2SE 5.0

or later. It can be run on earlier JVMs by downloading and

installing a compatibility package from the Apache Tomcat

binary download page.
Then I did an updat check and it's downloading J2SE 5.0 right now.
I'll get back after that's done.

Apple released a recent update that launches postfix from launchd, which we disable - but you may not have had that update, so you may have another postfix running.
After the update, check /System/Library/LaunchDaemons for org.postfix.master.plist - if it's there:
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.postfix.master

rm /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.postfix.master.plist
start zimbra
