Upgrading ZCS Open Source 8.0.4 to 8.8.15

Post by mdamda »

Hello everyone!

I'd just like to upgrade from an open source version of Zimbra 8.0.4 to 8.8.15

I've never really done any kind of upgrade before, so I'd like to check if my update steps are solid.

1. Shut down Zimbra
2. Create physical copy of the server from /opt/zimbra
3. Follow https://zimbra.github.io/installguides/ ... grade.html
Downloaded the .tgz for the latest version.

Is it really as simple as just extracting the tgz and ./install?
Can I upgrade from 8.0.4 to 8.8.15 directly or do I need to do upgrades in steps?

Is there anything else I need to take note of?

Some additional info:
Running this on a bare metal Centos 6.4 install, which should satisfy the ZCS 8.8.15 requirements of Centos 6 (studying an upgrade to a more supported OS next)

Thank you!

An intermediate upgrade to 8.6 is suggeted.
Upgrading on Centos 6 will leave you at P28 (Nov 2021) and exposed to the last vulns

Thank you so much!

Would you have any comments on how I plan to upgrade/backup?

IE shutdown zimbra, create physical copy and just hit ./install?

Will also download 8.6 now. Thanks!

An upgrade to RockyLinux 8 is in the cards. Just need to get this sorted out first :]

Thank you!!!

Since I am upgrading both ZCS and the OS and based on the contents of your post, I am (hopefully correctly) assuming that you suggest I upgrade 8.0.4 to 8.8.15 first before moving OSs?

As suggested before, upgrade ZCS to 8.6 first.

Then upgrading ZCS to 8.8.15 before (or after) moving to another VM/OS depends on your current OS.

If you upgrade ZCS to 8.8.15, you won't have the last patches (CentOS 6 is deprecated by Zimbra/Synacor, 8.8.15 exists but no more patches since july 2021).
https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Zimbra_Releases/8.8.15/P19

So if you want to go this way, I suggest (actually more than a kind suggestion, please don't do it) that you do not allow the internet access to your CentOS6/8.8.15 server.
Move it to a new VM/OS, upgrade to last patch, then open the access.

Thank you for the very helpful info.

Yes, the machines actually have no outside access and this ZCS installation is only available on the local network (small office).

That said, upgrading it was not a priority but it's probably high time to do it.

Thanks again!
