How to allow users to access internal LDAP address book when external auth in use?

I currently have a single domain that is set up for external AD authentication of the users.
However, some users need to query Zimbra's LDAP for address book synchronization, but aren't able to because they can't authenticate to the internal LDAP server.
Anyone know how to get this working with the user's external AD credentials?
