permanently delete trash folder items

Post by vs2015sv »

When I delete a item from my inbox it goes into the trash folder.
When I right click on the trash folder and choose empty Trash, I am still able to recover those deleted items.
Some of the emails in the "recover deleted items" are many years old (2014).
How can I permanently delete items so they are no longer recoverable.

Basically we are looking to free up disk space by removing these items that we know we will no longer need.

Thanks

I would guess you have the 'Dumpster' enabled? If you have you can read all about it in the wiki article and disable it or limit it's retention period. If it's not that then the Trash folder has a fixed lifetime that can be set by the Admin, perhaps that's been modified.

zimbraDumpsterEnabled: TRUE
zimbraDumpsterPurgeEnabled: TRUE
zimbraDumpsterUserVisibleAge: 30d
zimbraMailDumpsterLifetime: 21d

I checked my global settings and they are all set the same.

We are using Zimbra 8.7.0 GA

This appears to be a global issue as these emails are never getting deleted.

I have to say it is a little strange to have the dumpster purged after 21 days but want to keep the items displayed for 30 days instead..

Anyway, although the dumpster should get purged automatically you can manually delete it like so:

Code: Select all

zmmailbox -z -A -m user@domain.com emptyDumpster
ps: I am currently still on an older zimbra version (8.0.9).
