It seems self evident to me, the milter server isn't running.

Ah yes you are right, I had switched that off and on again to troubleshoot what I believed to have been a DNS issue, that looks like I have now fixed it.

My only remaining error appears to be

fatal: myhostname and relayhost parameter settings must not be identical:

I've looksd and it's not obvious which one to change or to what.

so my server hostname an FQDN is

newmail.XXX.uk.com

a web site is actually on XXX.uk.com
if I now set

[zimbra@newmail root]$ postconf -e 'myhostname = xxx.uk.com'

new incoming does this...

Aug 5 14:32:56 newmail postfix/smtpd[13503]: NOQUEUE: milter-reject: MAIL from newmail.xxxx.uk.com[192.168.100.27]: 451 4.7.1 Service unavailable - try again later; from=<rob@xxxx.co.uk> proto=ESMTP helo=<newmail.xxxx.uk.com>
Aug 5 14:32:56 newmail postfix/smtpd[13503]: disconnect from newmail.xxxx.uk.com[192.168.100.27] ehlo=1 mail=0/1 quit=1 commands=2/3

new outgoing does this...

Aug 5 14:32:59 newmail postfix/error[13976]: C33EC1021CB85: to=<admin@newmail.xxxx.com>, relay=none, delay=178747, delays=178744/3.1/0/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (delivery temporarily suspended: connect to newmail.xxxx.uk.com[192.168.100.23]:7025: No route to host)
