The problem from the plug-in side is solved - I have informed the plug-in author (David GUEHENNEC, <zimbramailnotifier@gmail.com>) and he was kind enough to make the new version (2.7.3) available very fast. You can now update your Firefox plugin and it works fine.
Zimbra has promised to fix the NullPointerException in code with the previous plug-in version in one of the future patches.
