ZCB BETA 3 Known Issues

Post by rduric »

Thanks Mike. I think I have discovered another issue with BETA 3. During a FULL BACKUP of my Zimbra mail server, my account is locked for maintenance and once the backup is done the account is unlocked. See an example from the mailbox.log:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

2008-11-08 01:53:16,319 INFO [FullBackupThread] [name=rduric@uoguelph.ca;mid=779;] mailbox - Locking mailbox 779 for maintenance.

2008-11-08 01:54:11,058 INFO [FullBackupThread] [name=rduric@uoguelph.ca;mid=779;] mailbox - Ending maintenance on mailbox 779.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like, the locked mailbox stops updating my BlackBerry which is OK. Ending the maintenance doesn't enable updates to my BB which is not OK. To get it working I had to restart the BlackBerry Dispatcher service. I had to do this restart every Saturday morning since the FULL BACKUP runs from midnight. BETA 2 appears to be working OK although we have a fewer users using this server.
In the example below, at 1:13 AM I received the last message on BB. From 1:13 AM until 8:10 AM, when I restarted the Dispatcher, I had a number of emails in my INBOX but not on BB. They all came at 8:24 AM. Several other BB users that I could contact experienced the same. The last received emails were before the start of the Backup and no messages until after I restarted the Dispatcher.
Is this a bug? Do other ZCB users experience the same?

rduric, did you confirm that it was the weekly locking causing BB not receiving email until you manually restart the dispatcher? We are thinking of moving to ZCB Beta 3.
another point, did you upgrade to latest ZCS? like 5.0.10 at least. please share what happen to your experience.
thx

ZCB BETA 3 Known Issues

I'm 100% sure it is the weekly full backup that stops delivering emails to BES and the BB Dispatcher service restart fixes it until the next full backup.
I've been doing this restart for a few weeks and the zcs upgrade to 5.0.11 is scheduled for Dec 20th which is supposed to resolve this issue.
I have around 30 BlackBerries on BETA 3 and besides the above issue I'd get a new address book (AB) every time I restart the Dispatcher. Multiple ABs are limited to BB software v4.5 and later, i.e. CURVE and BOLD in my case. You can empty out multiple address books by connecting BB to the BB Desktop Manager or while in AB just type in RSET (capitalized).
While I was running BETA 2 I had not experienced the above issues.
Hope this helps.

Thanks rduric I just upgraded my 8700 model to Bold and restarted the "controller" service, yep the phone will show "activation complete" again but I didn't have another Calendar. The only calendar in my Bold is "Desktop" I assumed this is the norm. Everything else is working fine.

Correct, you'll have only one Calendar but duplicate entries in your Contacts after the restart. Of course, if you have no Contacts than no duplicates.

Funny, because I did not have the duplicate Contacts issue so I went and restarted the controller service again. And this time, no "Activation Complete" message shows up, no duplicate contacts. Everything seems normal!?
I will try it again later and post results.

EDIT:
I spoke too soon, the "Activation Complete" did show up, but contacts remain unchanged. So far it is acceptable I guess, but not perfect.

Could you also restart the BB Dispatcher service? I would stop the BB Controller first and than stop the BB Dispatcher. A restart is just the opposite, first restart the Dispatcher and than the Controller.

Before I do that, I want to ask if you would also receive a NULL message each time you restarted the Controller service? For me, a msg arrives in my Inbox each time and it appeares to be an "editable" message (similar to a saved draft?). The message is about 2KB in size but I don't know to look under the hood.
zmmsgtrace shows no long of this message whatsoever.

rduric, I restarted Controller & Dispatcher in the order and same results, no duplicated contacts found yet.
