What is the difference between backup mailbox and export mailbox in zimbra desktop?

I know that that zimbra exports a mailbox as .tgz file which can be imported back. But there is also an option called backup which also backs up the mailbox as .tgz file, which can be restored. What is the difference between the two other? Also are they interchangeable i.e. can a mailbox that has been "backed up" as .tgz be "imported" or can a mailbox that has been "exported" be "restored"??
