Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 on OpenSuSe 13.1 x86_64 don't start at all

You're going to have to give some indication of what exactly is the problem and "don't start at all" doesn't mean anything without a full description of the problem and any error messages that you see.

Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 on OpenSuSe 13.1 x86_64 don't start at all

Having just been through a similar problem on x86_64 Fedora 19, I suspect that you're missing the 32-bit JDK/JRE package. You might have the 64-bit version, but, unfortunately, the 32-bit version is required because zdeskop has a 32-bit shared library that needs to be loaded.

Part of the problem here is that the error won't show up, even on the terminal (let alone the GUI). You need to read the startup script to figure out where the logging messages go. You should look in ${HOME}/zdesktop/log/zdesktop.out -- an actual error is likely to appear there. If I'm right, you'll see an error like this near the end of that log file:

java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /opt/zimbra/zdesktop/lib/libzimbra-native.so: /opt/zimbra/zdesktop/lib/libzimbra-native.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 (Possible cause: architecture word width mismatch)

On my x86_64 Fedora 19 machine, I fixed this problem by installing java-1.7.0-openjdk.i686, and then everything worked as expected.

You either need to make sure that the 32-bit one is the default, or that Zimbra explicitly picks up the 32-bit version. Setting JAVA_HOME (either in your environment or by editing the ${HOME}/zdesktop/bin/zdesktop script, should do the trick.

Regardless, you really should look in the ${HOME}/zdesktop/log/zdesktop.out log file -- that should give a better indication of the error.

Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 on OpenSuSe 13.1 x86_64 don't start at all

I am also currently running Zimbra Desktop 7.2.5 GA on OpenSuse 13.1 64-bit. When I attempt to run install.pl for 7.2.7 I end up with the error Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) not found. Please install JRE 1.6 or later. Java -version shows OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_51-b16) so Java is present but in the 64-bit version. This looks like an incompatibility caused when the JRE was dropped from the installation package. OpenSuse docs say the Open JDK version should work with 32-bit software. Does Zimbra require something else? Anyway to use the JRE from 7.2.5?

Can you try steps mentioned on https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Installing ... top_64bits.

These are specific to Ubuntu, see if you can run similar steps for OpenSuse.

How to Install Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 on 64-bit OpenSuse 13.1
The OpenJDK installed by default in OpenSuse doesn't work. You have to install Oracle's JRE and you should install the 64-bit version for a 64-bit OpenSuse. Follow the directions at http://en-opensuse.org/SDB:Installing_Java. At the end you should run sudo update-alternatives –-config java and select the 64-bit Oracle version for your computer.
Next download the 32-bit tar file for the Oracle JRE, which for version 8 Update 51 is jre-8u51-linux-i586.tar.gz. Extract the files to the /home/zimbra folder.
At this point install.pl and the user install at /opt/zimbra/zdesktop/linux/user-install.pl will both run to completion even if using the 64-bit JRE. If you attempt to run Desktop you may receive the error the script at file://opt/zimbra/zdesktop/linux/prism/modules/WebAppProperties has stopped. Click the button to stop the script. The log at home/zdesktop/log/zdesktop.out will contain the error This Java instance does not support a 32-bit JVM. Desktop will not run with the 64-bit JRE.
To switch Desktop 7.2.5 to the 32-bit version of Java open the script at /home/zdesktop/bin/zdesktop with Kwrite or other editor. Go to line 214 which reads JAVA=`which java` and comment it out with a hash or number sign. Below the line set JAVA to the path to the extracted 32-bit Java. The final result should look something like this:
#JAVA=`which java`
JAVA='../jre1.8.0_51/bin/java'
Save the file and exit the editor.
Zimbra Desktop 7.2.5 will now run on 64-bit OpenSuse 13.1.
