Universal UI vs. Next Gen

Post by msquadrat »

Hi folks,

I am watching the Q4 COMMIT recordings right now and am still into the Next Gen UI presentation. I just wonder how this relates to Universal UI. To me it sounds that Universal UI is a still planned facelift to the existing (legacy as Erynn calls it) theme framework while Next Gen will be something completely new. Am I right? Or was the Universal UI effort (around which things got quite quiet lately as well) cancelled and we'll have to wait for Next Gen for a facelift?

It's probably the same thing, you may have noticed the the ZeXtras products that are incorporated in the NE version are also called Next Gen (NG) on the wiki.

I don't think it is. The Next Gen UI is based on React (according to the talk) and the current, even the Universal UI, isn't. They also look different. So either the work going into Universal UI was completely ditched for another rewrite or Next Gen is the Next Gen after Universal.

I was just guessing but as nobody from Zimbra bothers to post any information in these forums and the Product Portal (plus bug reporting) seem to have fallen into a black hole but it's anybody's guess about what happening with the product(s). It's a great shame really as these used to be vibrant community forums.

Thank you for asking about Zimbra's Universal UI project. The Universal UI beta phase is now completing--we got great input during that process. Please look for an update from us about Universal UI in January 2018. Thank you!

Jorge:

January 2018 is almost over...news coming soon, or is this vaporware? 8.8 was much later that anticipated.
