New Zimbra.org site and Community improvements for the upcoming 2016

Post by jorgedlcruz »

Hi guys,
As far as you know, during 2015 we've quietly launched the new zimbra.org, one of the biggest improvements was the redesign of the Gallery (now Extend) but we are currently working on a complete redesign of the Zimbra.org for 2016 and here is the list of the Highlights for the next year:

End of December 2015/January 2016 - After internal conversations, and conversations with the Forums Moderators, the Forums will be migrated under forums.zimbra.org and will use an Open source Technology (PHPBB)

Moderators Program - We will open the Moderator Program again in 2016 to welcome all users want to help the Community, moderating the different Threads we have right now.

1Q 2016 - Redesign of Zimbra.org

Community Blogs RSS - We will activate an option to add your Blog RSS feed about Zimbra, and will be updated automatically with the different Blogs in the feed, different languages will be allowed.
Community Blog Contributors - Apart of the automatic Blog RSS, Zimbra.org will include a Blog where Contributors can use to write, or promote their Scripts, Zimlets, etc.
Community Code Contributions - We are working hard to put all the Zimbra code under GitHub, which will allow everyone to help with the code, do Translations, improve the actual Zimbra Zimlets, etc.
Community Featured Wiki articles - We will promote in this section the best Wiki articles we have in our wiki.zimbra.com and we'll allow users to vote. Best Wiki article per Quarter will receive a Zimbra Prize.
Scripts and Tweaks Gallery - We know that you have out there Scripts, and a tiny tweaks for Zimbra Collaboration, we will allow a new Scripts Gallery where you can upload your work, with the link to GitHub if you want, and people can rate and comment your work.
Improved How-to and extra information -We will write some essential Documents about:

How to size properly the Physical or Virtual Machine before install the OS
How to prepare the perfect partition environment for Zimbra
How to install the Linux OS
How to prepare the DNS, SplitDNS, Bind, Amazon route 53, etc.
How to install Zimbra in Cloud Environments such AWS, Google Cloud Platform, etc.
Documents with Migrations from different Email Servers

Zimbra Extend Zimlet Gallery Moderators - We will launch a program where people can enroll to be a Zimlet Moderator where they will manage the Extend Gallery, review and test the actual Zimlets, deprecate the old ones, etc. This program will have some good benefits for the ones want to participate.
Zimbra Technology Contests - Like we did with the past Zimbra Log Management, 2016 will have 4 different Technology Contests where everyone can participate and show & promote their outstanding integration between Zimbra and other Technologies, it will be an amazing Prizes for the Participants.
Zimbra Zimlet Contests - Each quarter of 2016 we will have a Zimlet Contest where everyone can participate, always with a new Zimlet. It will be an amazing Prizes for the Participants.

We are all looking forward working with you. If you have some idea, comment or improvement, please let us know to work on it for the new zimbra.org
Best regards

Thank you Jorge. The redesign of "zimbra.org" sounds interesting.

I certainly hope that this new forum migration goes well, as the last one didn't went smoothly -- from vBulletin to Zimbra Social involving an unscheduled downtime of about 3 weeks in September 2014, cf. http://community.zimbra.com/zblogs/b/te ... resolution.

phpBB is certainly worth considering, but have you also taken a look at Discourse? It's Open Source as well and getting quite popular these days (cf. http://www.discourse.org/faq/customers/).

Hi Hugues,

The migration will take less time, a weekend more or less, and this Telligent Forums will remain in read-only during the process. We have better planning this time.

We've been discussing the technology for months, and phpbb, is the most traditional and well know forum platform, despite that the new 3.1 Release include a great Moderation Features, etc.

Best regards!

Hi Jorge,

I don't see any mention about "pm.zimbra.com" in your announcement. Will this site be coming back ? It was a good resource while it was still updated (pre-Telligent) -- a lot simpler than looking on "bugzilla.zimbra.com" for new releases.

Thanks

Hi Hugues, it was indeed a really transparent resource to follow the Zimbra development. Let me work on that, as we have a plugin to do the same as pm.zimbra.com pulling data from bugzilla, and present it into our Wiki.

Yes please Jorge; I would gladly take all my 50 votes in Bugzilla and use all of them to vote for a working pm.zimbra.com!

All the best,

Mark

Good news about the forums. While this forum is kind on the eyes I find it lacks functionality compared to what was provided before.
For example there's no way to tell how many / if any people have read a specific post. Makes the place seem quiet
I hope there's improved mobile access too. Moving away from tapatalk was not a winner. The Android app was totally unusable:
