Zimbra 9 Modern Client in Network Edition Only
Zimbra 9 Modern Client in Network Edition Only
I was reading about the upcoming Zimbra 9 release in the public documentation being planned. In the documentation, I ran across the following presentation:
https://zimbra.github.io/zimbra-9-beta/ ... %20MWC.pdf
Based on this presentation from March 2020, it looks like the upcoming "modern client" will be a network edition only feature. To me, this means that the "classic" interface will be the only interface available for the OSS edition moving forward, and will most likely be in bugfix-only state. And my perception is, it shows the intended direction of the OSS product.
Is this perception accurate, or am I being too pessimistic? I'm curious how other OSS edition users view this information.
(Note: I am not criticizing or complaining. Synacor can do as they please. As an OSS user, my responsibility is just to plan.)

My plan is to stick with 8.8.15 for a while for both OSS and Network Edition. Outlook and Activesync on mobile devices are what the majority of my users prefer anyway.

Looks like zimbra has taken down their github pages section which detailed Zimbra 9. The information used to be available, but is no longer available.

They're closing the source and deprecating the open source edition, see here under "Changes To Zimbra’s Open Source Policy".feva wrote:I was reading about the upcoming Zimbra 9 release in the public documentation being planned. In the documentation, I ran across the following presentation:

They've been dancing around it for a while, but now it's explicit.

Sounds like it's time to abandon this sinking ship. Being open source was literally the only reason to chose Zimbra over a hosted solution. As a personal user this sucks, no way the company lasts long enough to support 8 until it's Dec 2024 EOL date. As potential customer shopping new email solutions in the near term this makes it supper easy to cross Zimbra out.

I created a wiki meant to for OSS users to collaborate and put our minds together on the next steps. My goal is to compare the different options and then start putting how-to guides out there on migrating. While I don't have much there yet, I encourage everyone to visit and start adding: https://www.myemailproject.com

I'm not 100% convinced that OSS is finished. Here's why.mntwinsfan wrote:I created a wiki meant to for OSS users to collaborate and put our minds together on the next steps. What is Zimbra 9 - it's exactly the same as 8.8.15 with a new feature called modern UI which happens to be closed source - just like ZCO, NG Modules etc. It's also possible to build or download the v9 binaries from a third party.
If Zimbra had also released 8.8.15p9 repackaged as 9.0 OSS would we be having this conversation?
Many customers, partners and employees want OSS to remain and therefore I do think there is time for this feedback to be heard and assimilated.
Re: Zimbra 9 Modern Client in Network Edition Only
I botched an 8.8.15->9 migration today by doing something that messed up my local package repository and ended up with a completely functional migration without the modern ui. It is certainly possible to install 9 without the Modern UI, and in fact if the modern-ui packages are not available it doesn't appear to even complain, you just get the option of "classic".Marc Gadsdon wrote: What is Zimbra 9 - it's exactly the same as 8.8.15 with a new feature called modern UI which happens to be closed source - just like ZCO, NG Modules etc. It's also possible to build or download the v9 binaries from a third party.

Using the "classic" UI in ZCS 9.0 was advertised by Synacor as possible (even if it's not really clear if the choice is per user or mailstore server).
The (open) source of Zimbra 9.0 with classic UI can be downloaded and compiled.
If you're interested in binaries and/or knowing what's going on about it), follow Beezim's work:http://www.beezim.fr/pages/binaries-bas ... imbra-oss/
