Updating Old Versions of Ubuntu and Zimbra

Post by mhammett »

I have Zimbra 8.8.12 running on Ubuntu 14.04. I tried to update Ubuntu, but got an error.

I then commented out the Zimbra repositories, but then during the upgrade process, Ubuntu removed the Zimbra packages that were installed.

I was upgrading Ubuntu first because I thought I saw somewhere that 14.04 wasn't supported with newer Zimbra installs, but I can't find that anymore, so maybe I upgraded the wrong thing first?

I see a 14.04 download on the 8.8.15 page ( https://www.zimbra.com/downloads/zimbra ... en-source/ ), so I'm not sure where I got that idea from before that Ubuntu had to go first.

Please confirm.

Any ideas on how to proceed? I'm not sure why when on 8.8.12 going to 8.8.12 (just a newer Ubuntu), it would be worried about an 8.7 file. 8.7 was never on this VM.

I downloaded 8.8.15 instead of 8.8.12 and the installation succeeded, but LDAP won't start. :-\

I rolled the snapshot back to 14.06 and installed the 14.06 version of 8.8.15. It worked well on my LDAP and MT\proxy servers, but my mailboxes are now freaking out about a version of zimbra-jetty-distribution

Code: Select all

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of zimbra-store:
 zimbra-store depends on zimbra-jetty-distribution (>= 9.4.18.v20190429-2.u14); however:
  Version of zimbra-jetty-distribution on system is 9.3.5.v20151012-2.u14.
Unfortunately, I can't figure out where to manually download that package from. Zimbra doesn't seem to have a friendly frontend to their repository.

Okay, I've solved the LDAP issue I had earlier. I backed up the LDAP folders per the Zimbra documentation mentioned in that thread. https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Ubuntu_Upg ... .7_&_above

I then used these instructions: https://computingforgeeks.com/how-to-re ... om-backup/
to restore the LDAP backup. I had to add a `/opt/zimbra/data/ldap/accesslog/db` command so that the LDAP would properly restore.

My main LDAP server is now running 8.8.15 on 16.04.

*whew*

Previously, I was getting this error:

Code: Select all

Host {redacted}
        Starting ldap...Done.
Failed.
Failed to start slapd. Attempting debug start to determine error.
6420f055 config error processing olcDatabase={3}mdb,cn=config: <olcSuffix> namingContext "" already served by a preceding mdb database

Now I'm on to bring my other LDAP server up to 1604 (it's already on 8.8.15 now). Then I'll get my two MTA\proxy servers. Then I'll circle back to tackling the two mailbox servers, for which a package dependency is failing. That might need to be 16.04 first, but we'll see.

Hello mhammett,

you probably missed this one: as root: mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zimbra.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zimbra.list.bak

This is needed to make the update/upgrade not doing anything to zimbra packages...

Glad to hear you found a way to bring your system up again despite this!
