notify when new mail has arrived

Is it possible to get notified by popup and/or sound, when new mail arrives?

I know from experience that a lot of users really want this.
if a am correct, the unread count in the folder lists, only updates when you click on one of the folders.

We will release a systray toaster soon that can do new mail notificaitons. Eventually we'd like it to handle mailto: links and calendar reminders.
The folder counts will update on any server action. So clicking on a folder, reading a message, tagging a message etc.

Actually, it updates on any user action that causes a call to the server. It also updates after 5 minutes of idle time.

Another option is to use a POP or IMAP mail notifier. My personal favorite is PopTray.

wouldn't it be possible to trigger a popup when new mail arrives?

We are now working with Domino webaccess and this works that way.

A systray icon is not platform independent and i think you should try to avoid it, but of course that is my opinion

That's not exactly in the product now (and our product management team will note the request), but there's a variant today: in the Options/Mail page, you can choose to "Enable address for new mail notifications:" There, you can enter another email address where you want to be notified -- and many mobile network operators provide an email address that's tied to your SMS number (such as 6502121212@messaging.sprintpcs.com)....

Another way could be sending an Instant Message, Implement a listner class and let it deliver all the new messages to the preferred IM account. Found an example about posting to yahoo IM's ...

This can be used to send any kind of messages..

I don't think it will make it. It needs some work to compile/work with the latest code and at the moment we don't have the cycles. At this point I don't think it will make GA.
